You know you dont even actually need to take protein supplements, the problem most people have is they believe the only way to get big is to spend copius amounts on powders and pills

Eat Tuna!

i do eat tins of tuna and slim protein bars and pieces of meat etc. Its just that at night my diet says to have a protien shake (or something like that - easier then a piece of meat/tin of tuna)as a snack mid evening. I don't want to get big as far as build builder type just like to get rid of excess fat and tone up.

The idea is to have surplus protein in the system so your body can use it to build muscle. What the body doesn't use will get passed out or stored as fat, so you cant just overload on protein and assume you'll get bigger muscles from it..

Supplements are exactly that, they should be used in addition to a good diet. I for one would rather have a shake or two to get that extra protein rather than each a couple tins of tuna.

A protein shake should basically be looked at as a meal, which being either to lose weight and / or to build muscle you should be having 5 - 6 meals.
The benefits of protein shakes are
- Cost. A powder bought in bulk should equate to about $3 per serve ( a cheap meal.)
- Convenience and easily prepared.
Most protein powders contain about 30gm of protein which is ROUGHLY the same as 100gm of meat, chicken or fish so you can see how expensive 5 or 6 meals of these would add up to by the end of the day and also the preparation of these meals would be a pain in the arse. A good idea is to have the protein as a mid morning and a mid afternoon meal as these are the ones that are most often skipped.

ON whey powder also has some amino acids in it which will help the healing process and prevents your muscle from being catabolized. this is very important.
