Sorry for the delay in updating this but I wanted to be 100% sure first and now I am. I sent off the letter by registered post to the police officer who wrote out the ticket and then heard nothing more from anyone. I figured I'd just receive a fines enforcement letter in due course but nothing. So I called the licensing centre who told me to call the department of justice who put me in touch with someone who takes care of pending convictions etc (where it would go if it was still being dealt with) and they have no record of it.

So it would appear as if it's been written off / put into the too hard basket which for me means I am 3 points and $150 better off, not too bad for an hours work including going to the post office and sending it off.
