One big point I think that liberals miss, is that you need to keep the masses happy to some extent. No point living in a nice house if theres a lot of people struggling enough to turn to crime/violence. No point in a nice car if youre gridlocked on the freeway for an hour and a half per day.
Its all about getting the right balance of socialism and capitalism, rewarding those who work hard, while keeping the slackers content enough to stay out of trouble. Otherwise you will end up spending more cleaning up the mess than what it cost to keep the crap out in the first place. (This doesnt even include the human cost). Works the same way with the other end of town too. Need to give the capitalists enough incentive to run a business and make profits. In saying that though, I think Abbott has really missed the point this year. The good economic times have put massive strains on our infrastructure and we need to spend the money to implement these improvements. We wont be running out of ore any time soon. It is important to save incase the good times end, but can we wait any longer for these improvements? How long til we're in a downturn and need the money to spend on keeping our population in a job? I think we're at a pretty lucky time where we can have our cake and eat it too. Something I thought was interesting was how is Abbott going to pursuade these independants without spending money? Hes talking about 'doubling' the surplus is 4 years, but thats only $6 billion (if i recall correctly) as opposed to labors $3b. To do this he wants to remove $36b (42-6) of NBN, but only comes out $3b in front.

Voting IS Compulsory in Australia, i think it would work better if it wasn't, and there were no preferences, a winner takes all type of election, the people who took an interest in politics and who are more likely to make an informed decision would vote, and the masses who don't care and can't be bothered educating themselves as to who they are voting for wouldn't and wouldn't be duped by a system they may not fully understand as to where their vote is going...

Gotta LOL at the NWO stuff. Sorry to offend but all of the NWO/illuminati/secret society stuff when examined closely usually ends up in an endless loop of fantasy peddled by various church groups in an attempt to try and prove that all of the "prophecies" outlined in Revelations (and various other parts of the bible) are indeed going to happen. Now I'm the first to admit that a lot of what is said to happen/be happening already is remarkably close to the mark but then these are the same people who also say that the world is only 7000 - 10000 years old so it's hard to take what they say seriously.
My parents are born again christians, my Dad was a minister of a church (several churches actually), I went to a christian school all of my school years and I was brought up from a very young age knowing all about the NWO and the illuminati and from my point of view it is just another way to scare people into believing what they want you to believe, and as if a place called hell where you burn in agony for all of eternity isn't scary enough. My advice is to live your life as best as you can and make the most of the time you have been given rather than worrying about something which as Kato said you have no control over even if it were true. And if anything, be thankful that you have the time and ability to even be able to concern yourselves with such things, because for the vast majority of people on this earth their main concern is where they are going to find their next meal, or whether or not their kids will even make it to adulthood before war, famine or disease gets to them first. /end soapbox

Nihilism is the worst kind of mental illness because it allows a person to constantly fulfill his own prophecies by doing nothing. When it comes to cultural progression, there is no such thing as the insurmountable scenario. Anything can be accomplished with the right amount of intelligence and effort. Nihilists make no effort to fix the problems they are confronted with, then claim they were right to be nihilistic because nothing changed. We have a responsibility not just to ourselves, but to the future. We have a responsibility to deal with the problems of the present, instead of pawning them off on the next generation. No church groups here, i'm an atheist and a skeptic. At the risk of inciting a riot and offending most peoples sensibilities, i'm a firm believer that the blind faith that religion fosters is not helpful to our society, its not a wonderful thing that should be treasured above all things, its an opiate for the masses, and that kind of social conditioning is no small contributor to why we've ended up in this sorry state, people don't do anything about it because they think its not their responsibility, god will sort it out, its gods will, whatever, its the ultimate cop out for taking not responsibility of you're life and for whats happening around you. Don't just be thankful that you can survive, thinking that its just how it is and theres nothing you can do. Be angry that the reason for half the world being unable to feed themselves is not because their country doesn't have the capability to produce it, but in most cases, a UN funded economic growth encouraging organisation like the IMF of the World bank has loaned them money, lots of money, privatised the water supply(that is actually a requirement of a loan from the IMF or world bank for countries that don't have a good credit rating) and then upped the interest rates so they can't afford to pay it back.... and noone except the polititions and their benefactors who have embezzeled large portions of the loaned money can afford to use the now expensive water for food production or drinking.... Then once you are aware of all of this, Vote accordingly and educate others as to why they should also. Without these companies and societies of the ultra rich having power over individuals then the chances are quite good that ~70% of the worlds population wouldn't be living on less than $1 a day...

I don't blindly believe it, theres a mountain of evidence to prove that this is the case, at the risk of repeating myself, you can find it yourself if you just look... for example, see what you can dig up about the world bank or IMF... its policies in third world countries.... how it has behaved over the last 40 or so years.... I would honestly genuinely love someone to prove me wrong here, i'd feel alot better about the world in general, you'd be doing me a favour really.
