well i'll be!

last set of 01 heads i pulled (jdm) were shimless, then again- it had AVCS, so there's something wrong there (must have been converted or such)

strike 01's from the list.

just buy some 2litre avcs heads, port and polish and it'll be a winner.

Ver8 + heads...no need to p&p...unless your going to use somthing Bigger than a 35R and your goal is 450hpatw+ ( not stock cams!...AVCS has it advantages and disadvantages...not required for all out power ! or even power spread)

Earlier heads V3/V4....will do 400 easy enough stock...(cam&springs of course...and shim under for V4)

later heads ftw, will accept decent cams un-modified.

The real question is what turbo are you going to use

Ver 6 is also shimunder so its the best of a bad situation. Ive recently just bought some Ported Ver6 heads, had them cleaned, machined, replaced valves and guides then threw some Kelford 262's in them. Spose we'll see how they go today hey!

Really?? Thats unusual!

Were they JDM 01 STi heads? They were AVCS as far as I'm aware. Maybe the Jap 01/02 WRX were AVCS, and export models werent??

Either way, my 02 WRX heads were shimmed. I spat a shim running too much Antilag and swapped over to v8 STi JDM big port heads, which were shimless of course. I had these ported and cleaned up, and fitted bigger non-AVCS cams and my standard non-AVCS cam gears, but with all the AVCS gear still hooked up (mainly to provide oil flow to the cam journals). Works for me

Sean has spat out 550+hp and ran a 10.2 on stock MY98 heads with springs and cams... They can't be too bad.

They aren't that bad, but if you can get shimless heads to start with, its a much better platform.

Also, Sean had to get his MY98 heads clearanced so the bigger cam lobes wouldn't hit the bucket guides.

Yeh that's with mad boost. U can make anything look good if u force enough boost through it. If u want more efficent flowing heads which means less boost to power I'd get them ported out. We will c how my ported heads behave to this theory.

Thought so! Stace isn't usually wrong.. so that would explain it

It's definitely the export model 01/02 WRX's that got the non-AVCS heads... I'm told the AUDM/USDM heads are extremely similar to the v6 STi heads.
