It's just the "not knowing" of its previous history that bothers me. Neil at mms recons it's in perfect condition. I was just a little concerned about the power level. He did mention the dyno had just been recalibrated. So might be a little low. I will be getting the el headers (I prefer that sound) and bigger intercooler. Might get it on a dyno somewhere else just to check. Who in perth specialises in autronic tuning?
And if it was the original engine you would still have no clue on previous history.

Services mean something, but dont tell you how the engine was treated etc.

Fair enough. It's pretty hard with these cars. I would assume the majority of them have had a bit of a thrashing somewhere during their lives

if you're really wanting to know history and chase the power, just get a new short block and put it on
whack a bigger turbo, change to a new age STi TMIC, bigger injectors, done, 220kw plus more

Not quite true. It now has a VF23 on it. We got no more power from it but another 30nm!

Well I was contemplating buying a newer ej207 short block, using existing heads (if the condition of then are ok) and fitting the vf28 back on and just leave it as that

Anyone know where you can get new short blocks from and what ya looking at price wise. I was hoping someone would sell short blocks with prebuilt aftermarket billet internals for ease. But can't find any online

Just use the current engine till it goes bang. Get someone to do a compression test and a leakdown test.

Then buy this - Subaru EJ207 STI Short Block | eBay

Assuming there is no compression issues / funny noises etc a new block wont give you any more power. It may be stronger meaning you can lean on it more but the gains will be in the turbo, heads, tune and a bigger tmic.

The vf28 was a great turbo in its day but its day was quite sometime ago. I would look at a vf34 at a minimum and depending on how deep your pockets are going to a twin scroll set up.

19psi...There's the main problem (apart from the stock cooler).

Add a GD Sti top mount and get some boost into it to see around 170 ath.

+1 on going with the VF34 - it has a way better compressor design than the 28.

I used to smash in 24 psi into my old aus delivered ej207/vf28/gd top mount combo with 260,000 km - never popped it
STI325V6 and StubbsR1 like this.
