My car has same problem when I bought it s/h 5 years ago...was found to be a faulty imobiliser module in the key - probably due to keys being submerged in water or simply dropped.

Completely random timing. Very annoying being stuck in UG carpark of shopping centre after its closed..

But damn those Subaru keys are expensive!

K, when you turn your key, that T piece in the drawing with the orange bar pulls downwards, joining the lead from the battery to the actual motor part of the starter motor. Making it turn.

If that bar is bent, it doesnt make proper contact and power doesnt make it through to the starter motor motor.

I dont know if this is whats wrong with yours, but the symptoms are identical to mine.

i wouldnt go down the track of buying new keys and sutff.. if the fuel pump is priming when you go to crank and the starter is making no noise at all i would say you have a problem in your wiring from alarm to the start relay or problem with start relay(most prob) or problem in wiring from start relay to start terminal on starter.. good luck.. im and autoelectrician.. if you need any more ideas just pm.
