ours were apparently brand new too but as i said it was the local servo mechanic so im assuming something went wrong with however he fitted them

i have no idea why there is silver metal dust on the brake shield, i'm going to assume it's from when my mechanic friend put a silver anti-squeal coating on the pads, and has subsequently been flung there while braking and the pad wears down.

also jess, that sounds similar, so was the wagon making the same noise as mine was in the vid i posted earlier in this thread?

Have the wheel bearings been checked??? I think you said at the start the noise goes when the brakes are applied, which could point at a failing bearing having the play (making the noise) reduced by the clamping force of the brakes...

yeah it sounded like that we were told too that they had to wear in but it kept going on i think it stopped for a tiny bit but started back up again.

i won't get into the accident as there were a few factors involved but a few days before the accident i was going over eric street bridge and when i went to brake the car stopped and then seemed to slip and rolled forward before it gripped again. Not trying to scare you just giving you as much info as i can remember, just that if it happens to be the same prob i guess i want you to check it out just incase. Our car wasnt the same after we had them fitted i just wish we'd taken it somewhere else for a second opinion.

One more thing we had a noise that actually sounded similar in the STi too i assumed it was to do with the brakes again but it ended up being a loose exhaust.......don't laugh!!!! Im just saying thats all

Some pad/ disc combos just squeek/squeal and there's little you can do about it...it used to drive me crazy with Pagid RS4-2 on my MY99, but other Pagid combos have been fine since (eg RS19 with DBA 5000 on current car).
A few things you can do (as mentioned in previous replies):
1. Make sure you have the OE anti squeal shims on the pads (usually there are two)...spray on anti squeal doesn't work that well.
2. Chamfer the front and rear edges of the pads (easy to do with an electric sander)
3. Using rough-ish sandpaper, sand the pad surface off a bit by hand to clean any crap off.
4. Check that your bearing nuts on the front hubs are TIGHT and the retainer is keyed in.

If the above doesn't work, you'll just have to live with it...it may or may not improve over time.

took it in to wilkinson's today,

idiots at city motors holden didn't replace my lower control arm and wheel bearings when it was sent in for repair after accident, so i'll be claiming that on insurance.

so it was the wheel bearing.
