Coilover spring rates
There is a high possibility that my car might see some coil overs before the end of the year, but before I can commit to this I need to decide on what would be an appropriate spring rate.
For a car that will be doing 90% of daily driving and 10% of track days, what would people recommend? For those with coilovers in their cars already, what spring rates did you go with?

Im running 6Kg front springs and 5 Kg rear springs.
The spring rates will be different in the rears for you since you run the multilink rear suspension setup. GC8 TEIN Super streets (Aus version) run 4Kg front springs and 3Kg rear springs. And they give a very comfortable ride.

I'm running 7Kg front, 5Kg rear. I've only had the chance to drive the car over a weekend, but I didn't really mind it, but I can see that some people would find it a bit painful after a while.

Weight of your car and type of damper on the shock will decide what to go for.
What is the point of coilovers if it is just a daily driver? A good set of lowering springs would be the best option. I'd have a look at the Japanese brands like Tein / Cusco and see how their spring rates change as the coilover progresses from a street unit to a racing unit. I would find a suitable comprimise... Coils with too soft springs will be useless if you want to do any track stuff, too hard will be useless on the road. For instance, I'm running the Tein Mono Flex in my Evo X which are 12kg front 10kg rear. Stock suspension is 4.2kg front and 3.8kg rear. However the better dampening of the mono tube shock means there isn't much jiggle in the car. It is firmer, but not bone shattering (I can dial up the shocks to bone shattering though).

Recommended spring rates do vary between manufacturer and also between vehicles..
In reference to HSD's fitted to Subaru's, they're generally very comfortable straight out of the box (in comparison to other coilovers), but specifying the 1kg lighter springs front and rear makes them even more comfortable. For something thats going to be driven 90% of the time on the street, a decent set of lowering springs will suffice and cost you about 1/3 of the price! |
