Definitely try draining the gear oil and replacing it, I've had good results with Castrol Syntrax.
Sounds like your synchroes are a bit worn and aren't quite speeding up fourth gear before you engage it.

You can live with it, if you want too, by shifting a bit slower into fourth.
You should be able to feel the two stages of the synchro and let it do its job. Or you can get the synchoes replaced. Which costs at least 1G

Ill pick up some redline lwsp after work tommorrow
i tested changing gears slower does do the trick
but can't see that being a long time solution

It really depends on how damaged/how bad they are worn.

It worked for me, as I used to change very quickly, slowed things down, and the synchos were fine!

I think I paid $180 for the 3.7ltrs when I did my gearbox rebuild. That was from Coventry's.
