Default quiet exhaust

Hi i have a version 6 sti with a 3 inch HKS exhaust its a tad too loud for me and was looking in the market for a more silent exhaust for those long drives.
Anyone have any ideas or recommendations? i want something with a bit of a meaty sound but not over the top thanks.

Have you considered putting another small muffler/hot dog resonator in the middle? The OEM Liberty GT have exactly this type of set up.

Quite often this will mute a loud exhaust enough and also remove drone.
munya likes this.

A factory diff back will be very quiet, basically returning the car to stock levels. Perhaps an oval muffler with packing and smaller diameter tip will suffice.

But be cautious as changing exhaust flow can interfere with your tune.

Empire performance and ultrex do a nice catalytic converter system for a really good price ! Very nice and refined rumble, not to loud when cruising but give it a little and you still have the boxer rumble.

Exhaust noise- The amount of insulation if any makes a difference.

The twin outlet oval style is reputed to be quieter than the round single outlet canon styles.
I like the HiTech brand for low noise combined with low restriction.
Yes putting in a hot dog resonator before the main muffler will reduce noise but not by much. (my guess is 2db).

Do you need to retune after changing an exhaust?
Opinions differ, I think- yes (fwiiw).

There are good opinions on here about the Varex but I am fairly sure you need a retune and preferably with a stand alone chip to take proper advantage of it with safe mapping. With Varex, the way I read it, at any speed you can control the outlet to get full open to nearly closed so you can adjust noise to your preference at any speed. Build it in the chip or have a hand control. This is ideal for open road/main road/track when you want power regardless of noise, and want quiet when you are in quiet residential streets. The hand control method may suit your long distance driving.

I had an Blitz nurspec muffler on my sti from when I bought it. I eventually got sick of how loud it was especially crusing at 100kmph+ Don't get me wrong it was one awesome sounding muffler you could hear from the next suburb. Did some research and ending up getting an AVO oval muffler. Cut the blitz cannon off and swapped them. The AVO is much quieter yet still has a good note. Highly recommend it.

Factory GD STI tip welded onto a high flow 3" muffler.

Oem and idle and low speeds, give it some Jandle and it's an entirely different story. Very little drone, even at 100km/h

Thank me later
