Setup of the home gateway was nice and easy, just plug it into the power, connect to either Ethernet or WiFi, fire up your browser and it will open up a web page where you confirm your address details (so 000 emergency calls know where to send whoever you need) and payment details and your away.

I'm going to change over my home phone as well. Means I can get rid of Telstra finally not to mention $11 or $22 per month line rental (the $22 per month plan comes with free local and national calls and free international calls to 8 countries and 22c untimed international calls to another 13 countries with the rest at 2.1c per minute)

So I give it a big thumbs up!!
Rubberbudgie: The unlimited plan states only one device. Does this mean only one device (as in you can only use the gateway and not a usb modem), or one device as in the gateway restricts you to 1x computer....

Also, what sort of latency compared to DSL? Any issues with Torrents?

The may finally be the answer to me being stuck on a RIM (apart from moving house.....)

Yes it means only one WiMax device (gateway or usb modem) - there is nothing stopping you plugging as many end user devices (PC's, PS3, phones etc) as you want although the gatway supposedly only supports 5 wireless devices at once although I'm sure with a bit of playing around with the software that limitation could be removed. The gateway also has 2 onboard ethernet ports so one of those could be connected to a switch, possibly both if the gateway supports VLAN trunking or Port aggregation (haven't checked for this).

Latency is around the 50ms mark (first outside hop) and no issues with torrents at all as the gateway supports both UPnP and port forwarding.

And yeah most definitely would be a perfect solution to being on a RIM

Go for it I say!

I was downloading a heap of training videos last night [I'm with Optus] and my download speeds ranged between 250 and 600kb per second - which I thoght was shit. So I was looking at the Vivid site and they were claiming around 7Mb / sec ??

So I did a little speed test with my current conection using www.speedtest.net and I got just over 9Mb/sec on the download.

I don't get it?? Can the site your downloading from slow things down that much?

What's everyone else's experience when actually downloading stuff - not just running tests?

**edit**

OK I just tried the speed test with other servers - like in the US and I was getting 0.50 dl and 0.27 upload. That corresponds with what I was getting last night.

So you guys that have been getting 9Mb/s - where was that connected to?

I think you'll find you are confusing megabits per second (Mbps) with megabytes per second (MBps) which is a common mistake and often a source of confusion.

One megabit per second (1Mbps or 1Mb/s) = 1,000,000 bits per second
One megabyte per second (1MBps or 1Mb/s) = 8,000,000 bits per second

For example, when a "1 Mbps" connection is advertised, it usually means that the maximum achievable download bandwidth is 1 megabit/s (million bits per second), which is actually 0.125 MB/s (megabytes per second)

Wireless off my laptop to Perth Server

Wireless off my laptop to LA Server

I find when downloading torrents etc, I am limited by peoples upload speeds, that's of couse when I am using my media PC to download torrents, which is hard wired to the router and gets speeds closer to 50Mbps

You must live next door to the exchange lol (or in Ellenbrook)

What sort of connection do you have? Wouldn't be ADSL2+ if you are getting 50Mbps, or is this from work with an Amcom ethernet/fibre connection?

Edit: OK I just noticed your ping time of 7ms so probably not xDSL, must be ethernet or something similar.

Default Speed Tests

What I've noticed is that a lot of connections tend to gradually increase in speed over a 30 second (or more) period and the majority of speed testing web sites only test download speeds for a few seconds which doesn't give you your true speed.

So how I test a connection is by downloading ftp://ftp.iinet.net.au/test100MB.dat - it's a centrally located server accessible across the WAIX network so 99% of ISP's will have direct access to it.

So give it a try and post up your results at different times of the day. Obviously transfer rates will be in KB/sec or MB/sec so multiply by 8000000 to get your speed in bits per second.

Edit: I just did a test then and got 1.2MB/sec which is 9.6Mb/sec whereas last night I got 1.99MB/sec which is 15.92Mb/sec

Shit I am only getting 450kb/sec

Maybe I need to find someone with a usb vivid modem and see what speeds they are getting at my house.

Kym is on Telstra Velocity aka Fiber so up to 100Mbps down and 100Mbps Up.

Butler has had Telsra fiber there for a while now and you can score massive speeds.
