almost always the solution when things go wrong, reload Windows and start again...
that's why i was curious as to whether this happened mid-use or just when she went to start up the lap top *on a side note Sarah do you think Mark will want a Colin McRae Memorial Cruise sticker(s)??? best get in to reserve some, i can send a PM for you if you like

Look, it is the cop out way but it's the easiest and least time consuming in my opinion.
The trick to backing up your data is to pull the hard disk out and slave it on another machine. Or possibly boot win pe or Linux and connect an external hard drive. |

I'm checking the system for memory problems. Dan I have no idea which bit is the hard drive so I might leave it as is and get Mark to fix it when he gets home next week.

How old is the laptop? I have both an IDE and SATA hard drive caddies if you need to borrow. The hard drive will be accessible from a flap on the bottom of the laptop. There should be a white cylinder symbol to indicate it. I would not restore factory image until you have grabbed your data off it. What version of windows are you running? You could always whack your windows disk in and attempt a repair, however backup the data first.... Although, being Dell and that "Restore Factory Image" option would more than likely mean it did not come with disks, designed to be able to reset it to factory specs with the push of a button..... |

You should be able to load in safe mode and roll back to the previous day... you probably have a driver conflict.

Woke up this morning and it is still stuck on the Microsoft loading screen.
It is a 2 year Dell xps with Windows Vista Home Edition I think.
