Default GC8 won't start - help!

Hey all... think this would be the right place to post...

Couple of days ago cruising at 80 in top gear, not under boost, my WRX (GC8, unmodded except for 3" TBE & removed resonator) stopped firing for 3-4 seconds before returning to normal (with no backfire). Had no such incident before or since. Today, drove into town & back, no dramas. Went to start it up 2 hours later and it turns over nicely but wouldn't fire at all. Battery near new & heaps of spark in it. Running BP98. All this time there was no CEL.

Searched on forums & did diagnostic which returned a code 22 (knock sensor).

Question is, why won't the motor start despite the CEL code and at least give me limp mode? Have read on here in several places where cars still run even with a CEL code 22. It may sound like a silly question, but would a code 22 necessarily indicate a stuffed knock sensor under the circumstances above?

Also, according to search on here the knock sensor is on the LH side of block near starter motor & under manifold. Is it visible without taking half the left side of the motor off? I have the description, but does anyone actually have a pic of it in situ?

Appreciate any help, cheers

Do you have a Brant Keypad immob?

Can you hear the fuel pump prime for 2-3 seconds when you switch the ignition to on (but not cranking it over)?

Faulty knock won't stop the car running btw.

+1 for faulty fuel pump

also

+1 for faulty immoboliser or Brant

this happend to one of our cars and after "limping" for awhile.. it did not start, nor primed.
Did the "kick-start" on the wrx but it started awhile and after less then a sec, it died.
Had the fuel pump changed and the immoboliser taken out and it fired-up sweet.
Usually it's the simplest things that complicate matters.

Had exactly the same problem wif my bug eye a couple of months ago on the freeway as well. Took it to subaru, had them replace the brant and it jus fired right up.

Thanks for the replies guys...

I had actually forgot to mention in my 1st post that INITIALLY the fuel pump DID prime, but on subsequent attempts to start, there is NO priming noise. So maybe it is the fuel pump, I'll investigate that further. How would this relate to the code 22 though?

And yes, I have the Brant. Wouldn't do without it. The operation on the Brant appears to be perfectly normal, unless it is responsible for stopping the fuel pump flow for whatever reason; maybe that's one of it's functions?

@ blommer: I wouldn't have thought that both the Brant & fuel pump could have died simultaneously ?

@ sleepy: did they charge for a replacement Brant?

Immobilizer = No power to fuel pump and/or ecu (ecu controls the fuel pump).

Brant relay/ control boards die without warning...Do a search on these forums.

(Auto watch 446RLI for the win)

Yes Subaru will charge you (could be up to $1k depending on what's failed).

Well my case was wen I put the code in, the fuel pump primes. It cranks but just won't fire up. Took it to subaru in mayree, they took a look at it and Mike there told me that earlier rexies hav pretty crappy wiring. So they upgraded the module for me and ran new wires for the start switch. It cost me $395 all up. Hope this helps
