Wearing full lycra gear for casual riding is almost as gay as fitting rally armour mud flaps to your car... almost.

Aside from the breathable nature of the fabric having been hit by a car from behind when I was riding in a bike lane I can let you know lycra (skins) do a fantastic job of preserving your skin and it's easier to ride in than kevlar jeans. Kym you'd be familiar with the large blue gravel sections of Connolly drive. I skipped about 40 feet up the road. Wrecked a $4k bike (snapped in half) but I came out with only bruised hip / kidney and 1 small grave to a knee.

So yeah it looks stupid to those who dont ride, but they do actually serve many a purpose....

see now i disagree.

1. shirt...pretty breathable, did a good good job when i came off.
2. cycling pants.......breathable and held up very well, i can also have a coffee with my mates and not thrust my fruit in their latte

Loose fitting pants/too many layers can actually increase the soreness caused by racing style seats. Saddle sores anyone?

I ride because I love it and to keep fit. I also wear Lycra and I don't give a shit how it looks because until you try ride over 50km with a racing saddle you would not know what it feels like with out lycra. I have had chaffing on the bits and pieces that chaffing should not be on and it hurts. So if I'm more comfortable then yes I wear Lycra, but I wont go to shops and coffee places in it.

Bitches love sausage in lycra, but not as much as they love my shimano gears and NASA grade alloys and carbon fibre.
