Genuine, as in the person lived in Japan for over a year and did it as a personal import to Aus?

I would say very very few if any standard Jap spec STI's would be over here. Only reason I would think there was any point to do so is that the car was an S-Series or rare Subaru that is worth personally importing.. (of which there are a few here and there)

Just your average run of the mill mass produced STI wouldn't be worth it.

Most just get half cuts or parts and transplant into an Aus shell

Do you still not get it? Its not like an Nissan, there isn't thousands of both ADM and JDM cars floating around all over the place. Draconian import restrictions on Subaru's mean that they can't be imported from Japan and registered* as they were sold here. You are literally asking to find 1 of maybe a dozen true JDM GDBA/B's amongst many thousands of Aussie delivered ones. The effort far outways the minor differences IMO.

*The only legitimate way to bring one in is for someone to have owned the car in Japan for 12+ months and personally imported it into Australia, had it inspected and registered: hence, very rare. You'll very likely find plenty of bugeye GX's with STI running gear but they won't be the true "JDM" car you are looking for, nor legally a matching numbers STI. This is why you are more likely so find a special variant such as an S20x rather than a stock standard STI that was already sold here
