Default Silly little questions to get us started

Hi guys,

We're building up a GC8 to go rallying this year. We've bought a caged car, but it's a bit of a bitsa, so we're having some problems getting it to start.

The car was initially a japanese v5 STi, but it has '98 WRX running gear (including the loom) from a crashed jdm wagon. Now, we think we've got everything connected correctly, but it doesn't start.

It's got fuel pressure, compression, but the injectors aren't firing (tested this by using the old screwdriver stethescope trick) when the engine turns over.

Can anyone tell me how the clutch interlock works? If the pedal is up and the switch is connected correctly, will the engine crank, but not fire, or not crank at all?

Will an Impreza crank if the gearbox isn't in neutral - we're not sure if we've got everything on the gearbox connected properly.

Cheers!

Other suggestions welcome. We've swapped two ecus in, but both of them are STi ones, not WRX...

Curly.

I'm pretty sure that if the interlock isnt working, the engine won't turn over at all.

98 WRX loom MAY need to have the cam & crank sensor pulse wires swapped to run an STI ecu.... Hence why there's no injector pulse.

It's to do with the factory anti theft system I believe (the STI's don't have it , WRX's do).

P.s. There's not interlock on my version6 STI either.

Thats right Rossco, if its a STI ECM then they need to be reversed. Don't know how many times I've had the "I removed my Power FC and refitted my factory ECM and now it wont start" line at work.

Cheers for the info. Unfortunately it didn't fix it.

However we've come to the conclusion that the injectors are gummed up (the engine hadn't been started for well over a year) and not opening. Multimeter showed ~14% duty cycle on the injectors, but no fuel going in. We've pulled the fuel rails and will get them cleaned and see how we go. Weirdly, no fuel is being returned to the tank either - maybe the regulator is blocked as well.

You don't mention the ignition system, does it have spark? You can plug a test light( an LED one, not a cheapy one with a globe) into the injector connector and see if it flashes to triple check that. Where did you check for fuel pressure, if there injector pulse but no fuel coming out and no fuel returning you should check the fuel filter and lines for blockage. what was the fuel pressure reading? The fuel pump is definitely working?

Some ecu swaps require the fuel pump relay pin to be relocated on the ecu harness.

Yep, it's got spark. Tested by pulling a plug lead, sticking a bolt in the end and holding it near something. Nice fat spark.

As for fuel pressure - it has pressure exiting the filter, and also between the two fuel rails. Didn't have a pressure gauge, so used the old trick of undoing the hose and getting covered in a spray of fuel.

I'm glad I don't smoke...

Can definitely hear the fuel pump run for a second or two when the ignition is turned to on.

If you got fuel at the rails then the pump is working! But if you dont have fuel exiting the regulator than could be faulty reg, check using a vaccum pump, if it holds vacuum then it should be ok! No injector pulse usually means Crank angle sensor/ cam angle sensor or immobilizer issue!

If you still cant find it go back to the basic and check your timing is all ok.
