Default Locating oil leaks - any tips from the pros?

Apart from degreasing everything, letting it idle and waiting for it to start leaking and then looking over every inch with an inspection mirror and torch, is there a better way of finding the source of an oil leak?

I've got a funny feeling it could be a rear mains but seeing as it's a brand new rebuild I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's something else.

Darren if its leaking you will be able to pick the spot easily if you garage floor is clean? failing that just get under and inspect regularly as you described.

If you got it done at a workshop bring it back as all new seals/gaskets should have been fitted if you've recently got it rebuilt!

Yeah it's booked in for a tune next Friday and they'll check out the leaks then but in the meantime I'd like to make sure it's not something I've missed when I was installing the engine as I'm no mechanic by any stretch, merely an enthusiast.

And cover the entire clean/degreased underside with oil? Yeah, that'll help locate it.
The idea behind letting it idle on a clean surface is to see where the drips are falling, at to find the source of the leak.

And that advice came from an apprentice mechanic, do they actually teach kids these days things other than how to change oil and fluids instead of actual stuff that helps diagnose problems?

Usually when MMS builds an engine they'll do you a really good price for putting it back in for you and make sure everything is running fine, was there any particular reason apart from cash that you decided to put it in yourself Darren?

the whole point on driving it is to make it more noticable, rather then waiting twice as long and when you come back from the drive, look for the leak from the highest point.. ta daaa

whose cares if you want to make it drip onto the ground, if its going to leak, you'll spot it
