The oil air separator won't leak oil at idle/ off boost as it's under vacuum from the PCV under these conditions.

Pm me if you want another pair of hands to help mate, I'm free any week day after 5.
The whole engine is never under any boost pressure. That is why the crank case vents infront of the turbo. The venturi effect sucks blow by through under acceleration so there is no build up of crankcase pressure.

They even leak in non turbo engines, normally the plastic ones have the problem and the metal ones are ok.

My point is that at idle the crankcase is under mild vacuum, therefore the separator is also, seeing as that feeds the pcv.

I know how the system works and why it reverses flow direction on/off boost in early non avcs motors, dual avcs engines are quite a different animal in operation.

I'm probably going to make a start on it tonight, am I better off dropping the gearbox or taking the engine out?

Best advise for locating an oil leak is look for the highest point of the leak, in other words start from the bottom of the oild you can see and follow it up to the highest point and that is where the leak is.

Not rocket science.

it's leaking from the rear of the block between the box & crank case.....There's the rear main seal, the oil air seperator, 2 or 3 oil gallery plugs.... pretty hard to see with the engine in the car...

Yeah i'm just going to have to bite the bullet and start the removal process again i think. i'm so over pulling the damn engine out, but at least i'm getting plenty of experience working on the car which is what i wanted just maybe not quite this much lol

Is it possible that maybe i bumped the seal when installing the engine or something stupid like that?

OK engine is out and sure enough it's the rear main seal alright. It has a definite kink in it so I'd say that's the culprit alright.

Now to get the old one out and the new one in and then the engine back in and fingers crossed she'll all be set!

Oh well, it aint going to fix itself so back to it for me....
