This should probably be moved as it is filling Greg's for sale thread.

Greg can you point me to where you read this as I spoke with the head Cage guy at CAMS in Melbourne and he said there is no changes to be made in regards to chromoly cages, the only change I know of are that the FIA has banned any compulsory tube with WT under 1.5mm.

Interested as in the process of building a new car.

And apologies from me. I only just realised where this thread originated. Thought it was a tech discussion as I only found it through "view new posts" function.

Maybe move the cage discussion to a tech thread. Some good info in there.

Mine has more more bars than that and cost $1200 shipped to WA!

It was put in by dieter for $2500 but then welded by a person that i have to keep anonymous about that charged $1300 to tig weld it (you should see the welds!) but this was all in CDS

WA seems to be a LOT dearer to have a cage done, i could have had a fantastic cage built back home by YT for $3-4K total starting from scratch!

Dieter did a fantastic job and he even mounted the seats on proper rails that were welded to the body and then the seat rails could mount to them! i could be wrong but i think he also did Franz's cage!

But if we are arguing about cromo v steel i would still go steel, can't see the benefit of cromo only a small weight saving but the cost is prohibitive!

Maybe because its for a GC not a GR?

<-- gr seems to have a few more monkey bars

Why did it cost $2500 to have it "put in" and then another $1300 to weld? what extra work was required? Thats why I don't like Bond cages... the CC.co.uk is pre cut and profiled and ready to go in the car.. no extra work needed.

Franz has a bolt in

as for the CDS/T45 debate, there is a 15% weight saving in the GC design going to T45 but a 35% increase in price. for 7kgs... worth it ?

The custom cages one will still need to be "put in" but some of the cost was down to rails and fuel lines and etc....

I am sure i could have saved some money (and the original plan was to do it and have a member from here weld it in) but we decided to get a special guest star in to weld it and that is where the extra cost came in to it!

There is no way that you will look at the cage and tell me it is a bond, but to be fair the custom cage is just a european bond cage so to speak (still a kit cage!)

If you had a good look at my cage you will change your mind!!!!!

No the cost is not worth 7kg, plus you can't modify the cage in any way being cromo it has to be the way it was homologated and engineered...... far to restrictive for my liking

7kg is heaps in a GX, that's like 10% the total weight

True that with the T45 you cant change the design. You can add bars, but you cant remove them ro drastically alter their position.

I also was lost on "putting in" a cage and then "welding". Not quite sure what was meant by that. I stripped the car and had Brad Stacey do the install. ie. put it in the car and welded it. Only thing left for me was paint and reassembly.

I am a weight nazi, so I will take whatever weight savings I can get. Raechel is a bit concerned about being replaced by an amputee.

EDIT: Weight saving in the EMO was 10kg going T45 over CDS.

Pretty hard to get 10kg out of a rally car when you start running out of options to get further weight out.

I have CDS in the dak dak but the next one is not getting CDS. Will check whether it is 4130 or T45.

I know race torque have bought the cage out of Europe somewhere but it is not a Custom Cages one.
