BALISTC knows their stuff
Default Redline Water Wetter

Hi everyone,

So on the way to and from Barbagallo yesterday, my car struggled a little with the 45 minute 5km/h crawl, with the air-con switched on.

Basically my CEL came on, which the MoTeC does for coolant temp.. I think its around 95 or 98 it comes on.

I also unusually had it come on when I was moving at the speed limit on Wanneroo Rd, but it turned off quickly when I put the heater on, on both occasions.

I'm putting it down to the weather basically as all my fluid levels are perfect with no leaks.. Maybe its a slightly lean condition at idle and very low speed on the E85.. But I can't be sure.

So my question is, has anyone had great success adding an additive such as water wetter to the coolant? If its going to help even slightly in 40 degree heat, then I'm happy to use it.

Cheers

Also, does anyone know if thermo fan activation temp is ECU controlled or thermostat controlled?

I have used it (by itself with distilled water) and found it to be really good. My main reason for using it was in a track car and knowing glycol is dangerously slippery if it gets on your wheels or the track.

Cypher industries uses it Joesac, so my car's run it for the past 6 years. Never had any issues.
Except for when (in my young noobness) I topped it up with green tectalloy... it makes it pretty nasty mixture. Ended up eating through my heater core and pissing out into my foot well.

So its not meant to be used in combination with coolant?

I would assume I would just pour it into my coolant reservoir to mix with my genuine Subaru coolant.

As Axle mentioned, I do know that it can be used on its own with distilled water.. but I didn't realise mixing it would be an issue.

When I stupidly mixed the two it made a muddy sludge type mixture/compound, which proved to be quite corrosive.

Can WaterWetter Be Used With Other Products?

Yes it can be added on top of existing inhibitors, however doing so diminishes the total value of heat transfer benefits that WW gives you in ADDITION to other inhibitors. For best results, drain existing, refill with distilled water and add WW.

Thermo fans are controlled by the ECU

95 or 98 degrees for coolant is pretty low for a warning light.

With OEM ECUs, the fans dont come on until 95. And the ECU doesn't even get worried until 110.

Joe,

dump all your coolant and go with water wetter and distilled water only. This gives the best results and water wetter does give the anti corrosive properties required based on my own experience and quizzing of redline themselves.

The only other thing you need the coolant for is anti freeze. Not an issue in this state Ethyl glycol is considerably less conductive than plain water. As long as whatever you put in there has corrosion protection, the ethyl glycol is redundant.

Redline definately works and is cost effective based on one bottle plus 5 or so litres of distilled water.

And as per above, thermo is ECU contolled.

O RLY?

Sean seems to think its 100, but last time I checked I swear it was lower than that.. so even at 100 its not an issue?

Light was on the cusp of flicking on and off, so it wasn't getting SUPER hot, but yeah enough to warrant me changing the coolant for something a bit better!!

The oddest thing is that the temp gauge sat ever so slightly lower than normal before the light came on, but not LOW as in when there is no coolant in the system!!! We all know how crap those stock gauges can be, so I'm not going off that at all.
